Title: Cofounder Disappearance During MVP Phase Raises Serious Roadblocks for Startup

A sports and entertainment-focused project I launched in 2017 began gaining traction, and about a year ago I brought on a more technical cofounder to help scale the product (I’m largely a self-taught junior engineer). This partner’s technical prowess was pivotal: he rebuilt our entire system, and we were on track to meet our MVP goals, having completed roughly 95% of our initial criteria.

Tragically, he contracted a severe case of COVID while in an authoritarian country, was subjected to involuntary lockdown, and became seriously ill. Afterward, he disappeared without a trace. I have attempted to reach him through every channel and have checked with mutual contacts, but there has been no contact and no information. It feels as though he has vanished from the face of the earth, and I fear the worst. Beyond being a business partner, he was also a close friend, which makes this especially painful.

From a company perspective, the impact has been devastating. He was the architect of our technical stack, and as a self-taught engineer, I’ve struggled to maintain or fix his code and address the ongoing bugs. With him serving as CTO, we were able to scale quickly and I absorbed additional roles in UX, graphics, and front-end development. His sudden absence has caused development to stall, and I’m uncertain about the next steps.

I’ve been actively seeking a replacement, but progress has been slow. Many applicants lack the necessary experience or professionalism, and today’s interview process hit a rough patch when the most promising candidate missed a scheduled meeting without notice for the second time.

I’m not sure why I’m sharing this here, but I still love the product and refuse to give up. This has been an incredibly painful experience, and I’m seeking constructive guidance or support where appropriate. If you have advice on rebuilding engineering capability after a critical team member’s sudden absence, or on navigating a stalled MVP under these circumstances, I’d be grateful for your input.
